Sorghastrum nutans (yellow Indiangrass)

This iconic tallgrass prairie plant is host to least one species of caterpillar and many grasshoppers, which in turn are important food for songbirds. The tall height also provides cover and nesting habitat for many birds. Seed heads turn a lovely bronze color in fall.

Best suited to larger meadow-style plantings as it spreads quickly by rhizome. For smaller gardens, consider little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium).
