No yard? No problem. If you have a patio or balcony, create habitat with a container garden. This kit includes 6 annuals and short-lived perennials that can be grown in containers and reliably bloom the first year from June to October. The nectar, pollen, and foliage provide food for butterflies, moths, caterpillars, native bees, and even hummingbirds. All plants are 4 feet tall or less.
These species are competitive and do well in drier conditions like those in containers. However, as with any potted plants, supplemental watering is necessary. These short-lived species will flower quickly and may or may not return the following year. Allow them to self-sow to extend the life of your container garden.
Plants included:
- 2 x Chamaecrista fasciculata (partridge pea)
- 1 x Agastache foeniculum (anise hyssop)
- 1 x Monarda punctata (spotted bee balm)
- 1 x Lobelia siphilitica (great blue lobelia)
- 1 x Rudbeckia hirta (black-eyed Susan)
Recommended containers (not included): Any type of pot with drainage holes works for these species: plastic, terracotta, etc. Combine them all in a large planter or use a variety of small pots. Fill with all-purpose potting mix.
- Container height: at least 8 inches
- Container width: at least 10 inches x 10 inches per plant (less for partridge pea)
If you plan to keep your container garden over the winter, a heftier container is needed. Check out more requirements in the description here: Container Garden of Perennials
