It may not have the showiest flowers, but this plant is a wildlife favorite. It's a host plant for many butterflies and moths, including the Eastern tailed-blue shown here. Strong stems remain standing through winter, making it easy for songbirds to feast on the seeds.
Rabbits and deer also enjoy the protein-rich leaves. Perhaps plant it as an offering to distract them from the vegetable garden? In areas with high deer and rabbit populations, protect plants until they are established.
