Cheery yellow flowers float atop leafless stalks. Host plant for the silvery checkerspot butterfly, painted lady butterfly, and several moths. The seeds attract many birds. Thrives in sandy soil and spreads by rhizome, though this species is less competitive than most native sunflowers.
